Fee payment and attendance
1. Tuition fee payment is monthly and is due on the 1st of every month for that month. Fee must be paid by the 5th or the first class of each month. If you repeatedly miss this payment deadline, then the school may charge a 5% late fee on the outstanding fee amount. Please send your fees (if sending through Paypal) going forward to nadasudhaschool@gmail.com or paypal.me/nadasudha. If you are sending to or decide to send via Zelle, there is no change, & you can use my phone number 515-708-0046 or nadasudhaschool@gmail.com. Cash is accepted, provided you put the cash in an envelope, and put the child's full name, class time, and month on the envelope.
2. The tuition is monthly and is approximately 4 classes per month. If there are 5 classes in a month, the fifth class will be waived or adjusted for previously canceled lessons at the discretion of the Director/Teacher. Please do not deduct for classes that your student has not attended and/or make partial payments for a month.
3. Do not miss lessons. If the student misses a lesson, the student will have to make it up at a mutually convenient time, before the next month starts. The make-up class will be at the same or close to the same level as the student’s batch. If you are going to miss a class, please let the teacher know at least a day in advance.
4. If the teacher has to cancel a lesson for any reason, a mutually convenient time will be determined for the make-up class. If a class cannot be scheduled in that month, then the fees can be adjusted when making the fee payment for the next month.
5. When making payment by Paypal/Zelle, please indicate the student name and payment month clearly along with any other notes to avoid any confusion and easy accounting. Please note: Per school policy, payment made towards the month's classes are non-refundable. In case you decide to leave the school mid-way during the month, the fees for that month cannot be refunded.
Tips for Practice
1. Regular practice is essential to advance steadily through the curriculum. Lessons should be revised on the same day as the class so that the student does not forget the lesson taught during the class. Until the next class, at least 15 minutes of practice is recommended every day. For senior levels, at least 30 minutes of practice is recommended every day. Parents, please ensure the kids follow this schedule or they may fall behind in their progress.
2. It is mandatory to practice with a shruthi box or with the shruthi app (on iPhone or Android) so that the student understands the concept of scale. Ask the teacher for more details on the shruthi app and your scale, in case you are not sure. In time, students should be able to turn on the shruthi box and start a song at the right scale without a prompt/cue. As you practice a lesson, stop in between and check if you are in shruthi (at the right scale) by aligning key notes of the ragam with the tanpura notes.
3. Identify a time and space for practice every day where you can sit cross-legged on the floor (not on a chair) with the shruthi box or app playing by your side. Avoid practicing in the car (as an alternative to practice at home) or without the shruthi playing in the background.
4. (For in-person classes) The school recommends bringing an mp3 recorder to record lessons in class. (For zoom lessons) The teacher may allow recording of the session which can be shared with batchmates. Please do not share this outside of your batch; definitely not outside of our school -- this is against school policy and will be strictly dealt with.
The teacher sends some lessons after class to the Whatsapp group. If the teacher sends a song for practice, practice diligently along with the recorded song(s). Play the song repeatedly to understand the way it is sung, understand subtle nuances, then sing along with it a few times, and then sing alone. Repeat this process every day until you are confident with the song and the talam.
5. Students should listen to Carnatic vocal and instrumental music regularly on Youtube/other channels. Even if the student does not understand or appreciate it initially, in time, the student will begin to recognize the ragam and talam and enjoy it better. Regular listening and practice will only help you advance in your own journey faster!
Parents, please play Carnatic vocal videos/audios corresponding to the particular ragam that the kids have learned in class. You can do this by searching “<artists name> <ragam name>” on Youtube. Let the student listen to the songs every day, in the car or elsewhere, or when they are playing around at home. Ask them to identify similarities with what they have learned in class.
6. Regular attendance at Nada Sudha House Concerts is recommended to supplement classroom learning. More details on this will be provided during the course of the year (we will resume online monthly House concerts soon!)
7. Learning any artform takes time and effort. It is a journey! It takes time and effort on the part of the student, parents, and the teacher. Nada Sudha School of Music strives to make this journey enjoyable for every student!
